Adobe Says It Won't Train AI Using Artists' Work. Creatives Aren't Convinced

WIRED

When users first found out about Adobe's new terms of service (which were quietly updated in February), there was an uproar. Adobe told users it could access their content "through both automated and manual methods" and use "techniques such as machine learning in order to improve [Adobe's] Services and Software." Many understood the update as the company forcing users to grant unlimited access to their work, for purposes of training Adobe's generative AI: Firefly. Late on Tuesday, Adobe issued a clarification: In an updated version of its terms of service agreement, it pledged not to train AI on its user content stored locally or in the cloud and gave users the option to opt-out of content analytics. Caught in the crossfire of intellectual property lawsuits, the ambiguous language used to previously update the terms shed light on a climate of acute skepticism among artists, many of whom over rely on Adobe for their work.

Machine Learning & AI in Search

#artificialintelligence

Regular readers will likely wonder what more I could have to say about machine learning (ML) in search, after having written How Machine Learning In Search Works just a few months ago. Let me assure you, this article is different. Today you won't be reading the ramblings of an SEO professional who fancies himself reasonably informed in how machine learning works as it's related to search. Instead, we'll be turning the tables and learning about search implementations from the perspective of a machine learning expert. This article outlines and hopefully expands on some of the core concepts discussed in an amazing interview with fellow Search Engine Journal contributor Jason Barnard and Dan Fagella of Emerj.

It's Personal: AI Leader Partners With IBM, Builds New Buy Zone

#artificialintelligence

As IBM (IBM) and Red Hat team up with Adobe (ADBE) on artificial intelligence and personalization technology, Adobe stock is trying to customize a new base and buy point. The IBD Long-Term Leader is also setting its sights on a fresh all-time high. In July, Adobe, IBM and Red Hat announced a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the digital transformation and strengthening of real-time data security for enterprises, with a focus on regulated industries such as banking and health care. Building on IBM's acquisition of Red Hat in 2018, the goal of the partnership is to "enable companies to deliver more personalized experiences across the customer journey, driving improved engagement, profitability and loyalty." Having already made its own successful shift to a software-as-a-service model, Adobe has become a major player in cloud-based creative, personalization and analytics products.

Artificial Intelligence Inching Closer to Deciphering Long Lost Languages

#artificialintelligence

With new technology available to us, we're inching closer to the end of the days when deciphering ancient languages is a painstaking task filled with frustration and confusion. Nifty machines following complex algorithms are helping researchers around the globe as they take on the often monumental task of understanding ancient texts and lost languages. Big Think reports that linguistic experts estimate there have been approximately 31,000 languages spoken throughout human history. Many of them are now dead and forgotten, but a new AI project may be part of the answer in how to decipher the writing of ancient languages. "While languages change, many of the symbols and how the words and characters are distributed stay relatively constant over time. Because of that, you could attempt to decode a long-lost language if you understood its relationship to a known progenitor language."

Stock Photo Companies Randomize Their Watermarks to Foil Google's Thieving Algorithm

WIRED

Last month at the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition conference, Google showed off an algorithm capable removing watermarks from photos. Using neural networks, researchers in the company's artificial intelligence lab could train an algorithm to identify recurring visual patterns in a watermark (the sans-serif type in Shutterstock's logo, or the dense logomark of Adobe Stock, for instance) and automatically strip them from an image. To anyone who produces or sells stock photography, this was troubling news--watermarks have since the early 1990s provided the first line of defense against the theft of unlicensed photos. Granted, anyone with serious Photoshop skills can eliminate a watermark in about an hour. Google didn't set out to undermine stock photo companies.
